Funds raised for biker with genetic disease

Tudor Rebels Far West Chapter managed to raise R12 000 for a fellow biker suffering from a genetic disease at the Love Pitbull Bar in Middelvlei on Saturday, 23 June.
Erens de Wit, the president of the Far West Chapter, said the initiative was to raise funds for one of their members, 25-year-old Ralph Botes,who was diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2B in November 2016. He had to resign from his last job due to his illness.
He needs to undergo stem cell treatment every three months, at a cost of R12 500. Once a week for four consecutive weeks, he has to undergo preparatory treatment costing R2 000 a week, excluding medication costing R900 a month, to prepare for the stem cell treatment.
“Stem cell treatment is very expensive and at this stage, Ralph’s medical aid only supports stem cell treatment for oncology patients. If Ralph’s condition improves as a result of the treatment, we can apply to the medical aid for support,” said his mother Yvonne, in a medical sponsorship proposal.
Erens said the club is committed to helping Ralph, as he is one of their own.
“There are two other people in our family with the same disease, but with them, the disease is advanced, and our uncle is in a wheelchair as a result.”
He said that if enough money is raised to pay for Ralph’s treatment, and if it proves successful, the same treatment can also be given to the other family members with the disease.
Erens added that bikers from as far afield as Mpumalanga and various parts of Gauteng such as Vanderbijlpark, the East Rand and Johannesburg supported the event, while others from the West Rand and Randfontein arrived with their families to enjoy the day.
