250 kids fed through initiative
Children who used to have runny noses and no shoes on, now come dressed properly.
Two hundred and fifty children were fed at the Toekomsrus Church of Nazarene as part of the five-day Vacation Bible School (VBS) programme. This year the annual programme ran from Monday 2 to Friday 6 July.
Pastor of the church, Eunice Sedith said for the past 43 years the church has been committed to keeping young ones off the streets through the programme.

“During the second week of the winter school holidays we get together and serve the kids breakfast and lunch,” Eunice said.
Asked what the purpose of the programme is, Eunice said it sought to keep children away from harmful elements that they may get exposed to, among them drugs and paedophiles.
“They are running free and being exposed to elements that may put their well-being in danger. By bringing them into the church, we bring them into a safe hub,” she said.
She added that most of the children have been neglected, or are without parents.

Eunice said the activities they offer the children are learning language, colours, the alphabet and days of the week in sign language.
She thanked all the sponsors as the programme would not have been possible without them.
“Without the teenagers and helpers from the community this would be impossible. The community took ownership because it is their programme for their children, and they are doing all the work.”
Eunice explained that over the years, the VBS has brought about change among some parents who used to neglect their children as many of them have started caring better for them.
“Children who used to have runny noses and no shoes on, now come dressed properly,” Eunice added.
