Despite the drop in the number of cash-in-transit incidents during June, the security industry remains on high alert.
According to the latest South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) statistics, a total of only 15 incidents were reported across the industry for the month of June. This is dramatically down from the 39 incidents reported in May, and it was also the lowest number of incidents recorded this year.
But Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Security Group, warns that the lower June statistics don’t mean cash-in-transit attacks are a thing of the past.
He said there have already been four cross-pavement incidents and three vehicle attacks nationwide this month.
“Although no cash was taken, two cash-in-transit officers tragically lost their lives in one of the incidents. Following the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee meeting in June, there was intense pressure on all parties to curb the worrying increase in incidents.”
He added the police had really stepped up and the Joint Operations Control Centre (JOCC) which was set up between the police and the private security industry is working well.
“The July statistics to date paint a different picture,” Bartmann said.
“We need to maintain a high level of visible policing with a dedicated cash-in-transit investigation team that is actively involved in intelligence-gathering and resource deployment. It is essential we continue to treat cash-in-transit attacks as a priority crime,” concluded Bartmann.
