#MunicipalMonday: Focus on accident-prone Lazar Avenue

In this week's #Municipal Monday, the Herald met with a councillor about possible solutions for the infamous and dangerous Lazar Avenue.

Accidents and more accidents have become a common occurrence. This is a concern for residents of Randfontein, especially those living in Randgate near the T-junction on the corner of Lazar Avenue and Botha Street.

For this week’s #Municipal Monday, the Herald spoke to councillor Sina Erasmus of Ward 4, who confirmed that people have been approaching her about the issue.

Erasmus said although the community has filed a petition to help resolve and curb the problem, she believes that by simply putting down speed humps will not make the problem go away.

“It may even make the problem worse,” Erasmus said.

She explained that one of the problems is the large trucks often using Lazar Avenue and hinted that speed humps could only work on smaller roads where, for example, there are stop signs. She continued by saying that residents can also help solve the whole problem by simply observing the rules of the road and, especially, sticking to the speed limit.

She added that Traffic Department officers should also increase their visibility.
