People at the Toekomsrus Workshop for the Disabled need answers, having endured months of unpleasant smells due to blocked sewage drains.
This is despite several efforts made by the manager of the facility, Anto Harvey, who said working at the centre has become a burden to the beneficiaries.
Anto said calls to the municipality to resolve the problem were all in vain.
“It is the main sewer of the municipality that is blocked, so automatically, it affects the whole sewer system in the area,” Anton said.
Anto added that he, and other people in the area who are affected, have been to the municipality to report the matter, but were unfortunately given the runaround.
“They always tell us that they will come, even on Mandela Day, when we had different organisations helping to clean up the centre. The volunteers phoned and were told that the municipality would be there within an hour; now that hour has stretched to almost four months,” Anto complained.
Anto said despite going to the municipality several times, no one from the municipality has been willing to help.
“The last time I was at the municipal offices, I showed them pictures and the messages that I had sent them. They confirmed receiving them, and promised to give the matter their attention. Two weeks went by, and we have not heard anything from them,” he said.
He said in his last attempt, one of the officials denied talking to him when he reported the sewage.
Anto also said the sewage is affecting local business owners. Businesses are losing customers due to the overwhelming odour and the health scare.
