Woman, 50, robbed after taking ‘fake taxi’

Police warn public about so-called 'fake taxi' after a woman was robbed having taken a lift in a Toyota Quantum during the weekend.

A 50-year-old woman was robbed of her handbag after she took a lift in a grey Toyota Quantum, which she thought was a taxi in Bekkersdal during the weekend.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, confirmed that the crime took place at about 3.15pm in Panyapanya Street, Bekkersdal on Sunday, 7 October.

“It is alleged by the victim that she was waiting for a lift in Flower Road when a grey Quantum with three occupants (two men and a woman) stopped in front of her. She got inside and the driver drove off. She gave the fare to the driver but he refused and said she must keep her money.

“While the vehicle was still moving along Panyapanya Street, one of the men demanded the victim’s handbag and when she refused he threatened her with a knife. They took her handbag containing her credit card before ordering her to get out of the vehicle.”

Lefakane warned, “The public must be on the lookout for the vehicle with the mentioned occupants inside. We further urge the public not to try and apprehend the suspects and rather contact the police immediately when they come across such a vehicle.”
