The Randfontein Taxpayers’ Association held a well-attended meeting on 22 November to discuss municipal issues.
At this meeting, many residents asked what led to the council’s financial woes and why there’s money for housing projects while service delivery is suffering. One of the residents asked, “Why should I pay my taxes if we don’t get any service delivery?”

Frans le Grange, chairperson of this association, said that the committee will investigate the matter. “It is in our interests as taxpayers to be continuously aware of the municipality’s financial situation. We will put pressure on the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) as well as the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) to make all important documentation public,” he said.
During the meeting, Frans announced that Matiam van Vuuren, chairperson of the AfriForum Randfontein branch, will be fighting for taxpayers’ rights alongside the Association.

Matiam mentioned various issues like the condition of the sewage plant, service delivery, and competence within municipal management.
“I have a lot of questions and no matter how many meetings I arrange with the management of the municipality, I never get my answers. If we all stand together, I believe that we can turn this town around,” he said.
Frans also said that by fighting for the rights of Randfontein’s taxpayers, they are working towards building a better town, instead of burning it.
