Toekies clinic target of vandals and robbers

The PJ Maree Clinic in Toekomsrus was robbed multiple times recently because the unpaid security companies were on strike.

The health and wellness of the Toekomsrus community are in jeopardy after robbers vandalised and robbed the PJ Maree Clinic multiple times.

According to Jack Bloom, DA Gauteng MPL, multiple provincial government clinics on the West Rand have recently been robbed because the security personnel assigned to guarding the facilities have not been paid and were on strike. By the end of December, patients and staff at times feared for their lives.

“According to DA councillor Donovan Cloete, the PJ Maree Clinic in Toekomsrus suffered a number of break-ins because the security personnel have not been paid for five months. Medicine as well as an oxygen trolley were stolen recently,” he said.

Bloom reported the issue to Professor Mac Lukhele, head of the Gauteng Health Department, but by the end of December security companies in the area have still not been paid.

“It is very troubling that clinics on the West Rand do not have security guards. State assets are being stolen and staff and patients are at risk,” Bloom added.

The Herald will visit the clinic with councillor Cloete on Thursday, 17 January for further investigations into the conditions at the clinic as well as the issue of the unpaid security companies.
