A 27-year-old became the latest victim of a cellphone banking scam when he was robbed of R15 000.
Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, which happened on 19 January.
“We have noted that people are still being robbed of their money or valuables through cellphone banking scams. The latest victim allegedly bought a vehicle from someone with whom he communicated only via his cellphone.”

The victim allegedly got information that this person was selling a vehicle and he contacted the person. The victim later paid R15 000 to the seller via cellphone banking.
“He neither saw the vehicle nor ever met the seller. When the vehicle was supposed to be delivered, the seller could no longer be traced,” she said.
He reported the case to the police and investigation into this matter is continuing. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Bekkersdal Police on 011 755 8040 or contact Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander urged the community to avoid becoming victims of fee fraud.
“When entering or considering to enter into a transaction it is important to verify whether the business exists,” he added.
