The authorities have managed to clear the R28 along Mohlakeng Extension 5, after it was barricaded with burning tyres and stones during this morning’s protest.

According to Kenny Mampondo, chief of the Rand West City Traffic Department, the protest was peaceful, but the authorities had to intervene as it disrupted the traffic.

One of the residents of the area, Chidiso Sehlangwe, said the protest was due to the municipality’s failure to keep its promise to provide electricity to the area. He said the situation caused residents to run amok as many parts of the area are still without power,  without any explanation.

“They promised us that they would provide 300 households with electricity, but right in the middle of the project they told us that there was no longer any money to carry on with the installations. We  embarked on the protest this morning because we want our needs to be heard.”

The authorities had to intervene as it disrupted the traffic.
