She said the incident took place two days ago in the early hours of Sunday morning, 28 July.
“It is alleged the mother woke up to find her infant covered in blood. She checked the baby and realised she had open wounds on the arm and was bleeding. She then rushed the baby to the clinic where she was transferred to a hospital.
“According to the mother, they had heard sounds of gunshots during the early hours of that morning. The suspect/ suspects are not known at this stage, but two people, including the landlord, have since been arrested for defeating the ends of justice as well as tampering with the scene after they refused police entry to the scene.”
Anyone with information that could lead to more arrests is asked to contact the Bekkersdal Police on 011 755 8040 or Crime Stop on 086000 10111. Alternatively, they may contact detective Constable Moeketsi Maoba on 072 561 9417.
Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, urged the public to refrain from interfering with police duties as it hampers investigations.
“Work with us and not against us to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book,” he said.
