Hijacked vehicles including a bakkie as well as chopped minibus bodies and other vehicle parts were found on a plot in Vleikop earlier this week.
According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, Randfontein Police spokesperson, seven suspects were arrested after a chase went down in the area at about 2pm on Monday, 23 March.
“Members of the West Rand K9 and Gauteng Saturation Units were following up on information about a hijacked motor vehicle in an Alberton case, which led them to one of the plots in Vleikop. At the said plot, they found a silver Toyota Hilux with registration number VVB245GP, confirmed to be a vehicle robbed from an owner in a Boksburg case.
“While busy investigating, they noticed a Toyota Hilux making a U-turn, which looked very suspicious. The members gave chase and managed to stop it on the R559 en route to Carletonville. Seven suspects were found inside the suspicious vehicle in possession of vehicle-stealing implements.
“Two more vehicles suspected to have been hijacked, in addition to two chopped minibus bodies and other vehicle parts were also recovered at the plot. All seven suspects were arrested and will appear in the Randfonfein Magistrates’ Court soon.”
Colonel Rand Makgatho, the acting Randfontein Police station commander applauded the members for their dedication and hard work in arresting the suspects.
Hendricks, however, added that the Randfontein area has been experiencing an increase in vehicle hijackings.
Police are therefore advising motorists to always keep their doors locked whilst driving, and …
• avoid picking up hitchhikers;
• never stop on the road if someone indicates there is something wrong with your vehicle; go to the nearest police station or petrol garage;
• when driving home alone, always phone ahead to give a relative, husband or partner your expected time of arrival.
