217 face court after Operation Prosper raids

The large-scale operation resulted in multiple arrests, the seizure of suspected illegal mining equipment and ammunition, with investigations still under way.

The alleged illegal miners, along with the other accused, appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court last Thursday, July 9, following a large-scale multidisciplinary law enforcement operation conducted earlier in the week.

The operation, carried out at the Losberg Kloof Mine in Westonaria under Operation Prosper on July 7, resulted in the arrest of 217 suspected illegal miners. Those arrested include foreign nationals from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho, as well as South African citizens.

The accused are facing charges including contravention of the Immigration Act and unlawful possession of ammunition.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) communications officer Magaboke Mohlatlole, 118 case dockets were enrolled, with some involving multiple accused. After assessing the available evidence, the prosecution declined to enrol certain matters, while the remaining cases proceeded before the court.

“The NPA remains committed to working closely with its law enforcement partners to ensure that those involved in illegal mining and related criminal activities are held accountable through the criminal justice system,” said Mohlatlole.

During the operation, law enforcement officials recovered equipment believed to have been used in illegal mining activities, including phendukas, foodstuffs and alcohol. Police also seized 65 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

The cases were postponed to various dates from July 10 onwards to allow for further investigation and court proceedings.

Operation Prosper forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal mining activities across the West Rand.
