Housing scammers target Rand West residents

Residents are urged to use only official government channels for housing enquiries as the department cracks down on fraudulent schemes targeting vulnerable communities.

Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Tasneem Motara has warned Rand West residents to remain vigilant against scammers who falsely claim they can secure or fast-track government housing applications.

Motara stressed that government housing is provided free of charge and that no official is authorised to request payment at any stage of the application, approval or allocation process.

“Residents must not be misled by individuals promising houses in exchange for money. These are scams designed to exploit vulnerable communities,” she said.

The department has noted an increase in fraudulent activities in which unsuspecting residents are asked to pay for housing opportunities or share sensitive personal information, such as ID numbers and banking details.

Motara urged residents to remain cautious and avoid engaging with anyone making such promises.

“Do not share your personal information with anyone claiming they can get you a house. Always use official government channels when making housing enquiries,” she added.

Residents are encouraged to report suspected fraud. Complaints can be submitted through the Human Settlements hotline on 0800 701 701 or by email at EthicsDHS@gauteng.gov.za.

The department also advised residents to visit their nearest Department of Human Settlements office for accurate information and assistance with housing applications.

Motara reiterated that protecting communities from fraud requires collective vigilance and urged residents to spread awareness to help prevent others from falling victim to scams.
