SPCA needs funds or its doors will close

'Financially, things are not looking great for us'

At least two months.

That is how long the Rand West SPCAs will be able to run the pound at Westonaria and Randfontein due to their current financial situation.

Janette Muller, National Senior Inspector and acting chairperson said Covid-19 has affected many businesses, and has changed some lives drastically, including those of SPCAs.

“Financially, things are not looking great for us. We rely solely on members of the public for their generosity to keep doing our vital work – fighting against cruelty and providing a safe haven for lost, abandoned and abused animals. The municipality still owes us money for running the pound for the last two years, and still no new contract is signed after being promised that all outstanding money would be paid by June.”

Furthermore, she said, donations of food and blankets can be made directly to the SPCA, and that financial donations are also needed to keep fuel in the tanks to reach animals need.

I would like to thank the public for their generous contributions the last couple of months, as we wouldn’t have made it this far without the community,” she said.

Rene van Straten, Rand West SPCA trainee inspector added that adoptions have officially re-opened and they have many animals in need of a new home.

“We have strict protocols in place and the public can view any adoption information, the process and pictures of the animals on our Facebook page: SPCA Randfontein and Westonaria, or contact our offices: Randfontein 011 412 3114; Westonaria 078 911 0789.”
