‘Everyone is at risk, regardless of their age’ – local paediatrician

Paediatrician says the most common concern from parents is that their little one might get seriously ill, or even worse ...

Most children have finally gone back to school after months of staying at home. The coronavirus has brought the world to its knees for months, and has affected livelihoods, jobs and life in general.

Dr Amukelani Mthombeni, new paediatrician at Lenmed Randfontein Private Hospital said as people ease back into their normal lives, parents can play a huge part in making sure that children remain safe amid Covid-19.

Parents need to try by all means to teach children how to adhere to the public health measures when it comes to preventing the spread of Covid-19.

“This means staying at home when sick, washing hands with soap and water, cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects, and covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing,” Dr Mthombeni said.

She said while extensive research still has to be done on the virus, it has become evident that everyone is at risk, regardless of their age.

“However, we can all minimise that by adhering to the strict public health measures,” the doctor advised.

She added by simply going to school, children are at risk of the virus. The most common concern among parents, she said, is that their little one might get seriously ill, or even worse …

“I think we all could benefit from more research on this subject as it is relatively new, but let’s continue practicing the necessary precautions to limit its spread.”

She said she is dedicated to her job as parents are often gripped by frustration when their children get sick and are helpless.

“I wanted to be the person who goes through that with them and makes it better. My passion is the management and support of mothers with babies that are born prematurely. I wanted to be someone who is saving and improving the quality of children’s lives and be part of the community.

The coronavirus will not last forever, but for now, let’s stick to the strict measures as advised,” she said.
