Helping the community

Child & Family Welfare in Randpoort opened its door just before lockdown and has been helping community members ever since.

After NG-Welfare Randfontein had closed their doors in 2019, Anthony Weilbach of Child & Family Welfare saw a growing need in the community.

This new non-profit organisation is situated in the old NG-Welfare Randfontein building in Randpoort, and they are rendering the same services.

We have been operational since March 2020. During the lockdown, we have grown from being able to help community members with only a 2,5kg bag of maize meal to providing food parcels to community members as well as underprivileged learners at Laerskool Rapportryer regularly,” said Anthony.

He also said their team of social workers are working with the Magistrates’ Court to help with any cases regarding children and families.

“We will help you through the whole process and work with the court on any family-related cases. We want to help in any way we can. We see a lot of gender-based violence cases, which is very concerning. We will go out of our way to make sure that the women and children of Randfontein remain safe,” he added.

Up until now, they have been making loans to keep their doors open, but they are working on a strategy to get the funds they need. He said they are a business and need funding and donations to be able to help the community. “We were thrown into the deep end when lockdown began and we saw this huge need in the community, but we weren’t on our feet yet. Hopefully, we will get the help we need so we can help the community even more.

We are thinking of new ways continuously to help the community. We are especially excited about our voucher book and we think it will be very popular.

“Anyone can buy a booklet with 10 x R100 vouchers for R1 000, and they can hand out these vouchers as they see fit. People who receive the voucher can then come to us and we will give them food or clothes, depending on their needs,” he added.
