Feeding the hungry one bucket at a time

The joint initiative by Excella, owned by Wilmar, and The Gift of The Givers brings over 1 400 smiles to residents living at the dumping site.

A total of 1 440 buckets packed with food were donated to residents of the informal settlement at the Randfontein Dumping Site on Thursday, 10 September.

This thanks to a joint initiative by Excella, which is owned by Wilmar, and The Gift of The Givers.

According to Charlene Strauss, coordinator of Wilmar’s Broad Based Black Empowerment (BBBE) programme, the food was packed in buckets that residents also can use to store clean drinking water.

She explained that they embarked on the initiative after coming across the needy community located just 4,5km from their factory while they were driving around town.

“We knew immediately that they needed help because they have limited access to water and were living in dire conditions. We felt we could make a difference by making this donation,” Charlene added.
