Hundreds of PPE handed to recycling workers

Six recycling cooperatives benefit from personal protective equipment handover.

At least 200 sets of personal protective equipment (PPEs) were handed to six recycling cooperatives in Rand West City on Thursday, 28 July.

According to Godfrey Moutloali, senior communications officer of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), the handover was done by MMC David Molebatsi on behalf of the Integrated Waste and Environmental Management Department.

The waste recycling cooperatives that benefited were Mohlakeng Buyback Centre, Randfontein Dumping Site, Mvelo Recycling Centre, Ilanya Waste Recycling Centre, Bekkersdal Recycling Centre and Libanon Landfill Site.

During the handover, MMC Molebatsi said it was important for the RWCLM to support these cooperatives as they are quickly establishing themselves as an important pillar of the local economy, helping to clean environments while they provide job opportunities for many.

“Already over 200 people are able to feed their families as a result of these cooperatives; therefore, we urge the public to start looking at litter as wealth instead of waste,” Molebatsi added.
