The gift of vision for people with albinism

Four members of the local albinism community in Mohlakeng were given free eye tests and pairs of spectacles by a local optometrist on Saturday, August 14.

The giving-back was initiated by Member of Parliament Jane Mananiso, who had been in talks with Dr Ezekiel Mosete to help people living with albinism, many of whom are prone to impaired vision.

“After Dr Mosete and I brought up the idea with the beneficiaries and their families, we saw the gesture would be appreciated immensely,” Mananiso said.

Dr Mosete added he was proud to support the project through his practice, and that they intended to help as many people as possible. He plans to make the project ongoing among the albinism community in Rand West City.

“No one should be left behind, especially those who are disadvantaged,” Dr Mosete said.

Mananiso added the project started with her as an activist who coordinated many programmes to uplift and empower many in the community, after she realised the needs of people with albinism were overlooked.

“This is one of the issues I wanted to tackle in this community, because I believe we should always strive to make sure we change their lives for the better,” Mananiso said.
