Operations manager at Mapogo, Ben Willemse said only three incidents were reported for their client base for the period between Monday, August 23 and Sunday, August 29.
A breakdown of the crime incidents:
• Wednesday, August 25 at 02:31 – Housebreaking and theft in North Way Avenue, Greenhills. Intruders gained entry into the premises by climbing over the front wall. They forced open the garage door where they stole laptop computers from a vehicle and fled the scene.
• Wednesday, August 25 August at 14:26 – Robbery in Kameel Street, Greenhills. Five thugs entered the shop and held up the cashier. They fled the scene with approximately R2 500 in cash in a grey BMW.
• Sunday, August 29 at 09:33 – Theft in Toyota Street, Aureus. Thieves broke the gate lock and stole truck tyres from the premises.
He gave the following advice to avoid false alarms:
• Make sure to familiarise yourself with the alarm system operation and functions.
• Ensure that you cancel any false alarm activation immediately by contacting the Mapogo Control Room on 010 492 4321.
• Ensure that the alarm system battery is in a good condition to avoid false alarms during power outages.
• Keep the area around motion sensors clear of obstructions.
• Ensure that all doors and windows are securely closed or locked prior to exiting the premises.
• Ensure that panic buttons or other emergency activation features are out of reach of children or areas with high movement to avoid accidental activations.
• Check the batteries of any wireless devices and the back-up power to the primary keypad.
• Keep alarm equipment in good working order.
