Bekkersdal school adopts their own cop

Learners were addressed on road safety, substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, respect and discipline, to name a few.

The Bekkersdal police in partnership with the Rand West City traffic police visited Ipeleng Primary School on Tuesday, June 21. Captain Johanna Zeelie, whom the school adopted as part of the Adopt a Cop initiative, addressed the Grade 7 learners.

Bekkersdal Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the captain explained the functions and responsibilities of the police.

We are there to prevent and combat anything that may threaten the public’s safety and security; ensure that all who find themselves on the wrong side of the law are brought to book; and investigate all crimes that threaten the community,” said Captain Zeelie.

She advised the learners to refrain from being bullies, but instead care and protect one another; and said learners must not engage in activities that may lead them to crime.

“Learners were addressed on road safety, substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, respect and discipline, and were encouraged to walk in groups to and from school to avoid being targeted. The school management acknowledged the gesture and thanked everyone for the support and for always being available when needed,” said Sergeant Lefakane.
