Local NPC wants to ensure pets are sterilised

Even though there is a SPCA in Randfontein, some people still abandon dogs at the side of the road. Stephan Hendricks wants to prevent it, and that's one of the main reasons for the sterilisation drive

Through their sterilisation drives an NPC in town helps those who might not be able to afford the cost of having their animals sterilised.

Founder of No More Tears Animal Rescue, Stephan Hendricks said they have a big problem in Randfontein with animals that people don’t want, and animals that are just dumped.

“That’s why sterilising your animal is necessary. It is not going to make a real difference in the short term, but it will in the long term, because the more animals one can sterilise, the fewer dogs and cats will be handed out on social media, and that’s the reason we are doing this.”

He added that the local SPCA takes in an incredible number of animals each month. Unfortunately people don’t support adopting from the SPCA or from other animal-welfare institutions – most would rather go and buy an animal.

“We ask people to pay what they can afford. We do not charge a specific rate, only what people can contribute to have their cats and dogs sterilised.”

Stephan’s goal is to sterilise as many animals as possible because a lot of people sell kittens and puppies on social media, and many of them do not get vaccinated or sterilised.

“Eventually the animals end up somewhere with people who don’t actually care about them once the puppy or kitten has lost its cuteness. Seven out of ten times they are left in appalling conditions without proper care.”

He said even though there is a SPCA in Randfontein, some people still abandon dogs at the side of the road. He wants to prevent that sort of thing and that’s one of the main reasons for the sterilisation drive.

“We have a really good sponsor that’s willing to help, so as long as she can sponsor us we will carry on with the project. We will try to do it every second month, and then hopefully every month.”

“Sterilisation is also important for your animal’s health and unfortunately if people don’t adopt animals they get put down. People need to understand that owning an animal is a long-term commitment.”

Stephan would like to say thank you to Mandy Lu who sponsors and contributes to the drive; to Tales Of Tails that’s willing to accommodate them; and to Louisa Rossouw who makes her premises available for this drive. He also thanked Liezel Hefer and Riana Cronje who work with him.
