Simple tips for safer homes
Real estate company shares six practical tips for homeowners to protect their homes, families and property value.
REMAX Southern Africa encourages homeowners to take practical steps to protect their properties, safeguard their families, and maintain long-term value.
“Safety is one of the first questions buyers and sellers raise when deciding on a property. A secure home gives peace of mind and protects property value. Small, consistent actions combined with the right technology and community awareness can make a real difference,” said the real estate company’s CEO, Adrian Goslett.
1. Strengthen your perimeter
Check walls, fences and gates to ensure they are solid and difficult to climb. Keep gates locked, install burglar bars on accessible windows and repair any weak spots.
2. Use alarm systems
Combine visible deterrents, like electric fencing and security gates, with active measures such as alarms and armed response for maximum protection.
3. Improve exterior lighting
Well-lit homes are less appealing to criminals. Motion-sensor lights around entrances, driveways and side paths help and trim shrubs or trees that could block visibility.
4. Secure doors, windows and access points
Use strong doors with quality locks and deadbolts. Ensure all windows lock properly and reinforce vulnerable access points like skylights, garages or small bathroom windows.
5. Use technology to your advantage
CCTV, video doorbells, and app-enabled alarms allow homeowners to monitor properties remotely. Even basic, visible camera systems can deter crime.
6. Build community awareness
Neighbour networks remain highly effective. Use WhatsApp groups, street committees, or local patrols to share alerts and coordinate responses to suspicious activity.
“Home security is not about living in fear; it’s about living prepared. Sensible precautions and community cooperation make neighbourhoods safer for everyone. Always stay informed about local risks and review your safety measures regularly,” Goslett concluded.
