More than 700 people arrested in Operation Shanela
The operation was aimed at getting rid of the criminal element in the area and ensuring a safer festive season which is slowly approaching.

Police officers from different parts of the Rand West embarked on Operation Shanela, to sweep out the criminal elements in and around Westonaria and ensure a safer festive season which is slowly approaching.
This was on November 25 on the N12 and the operation was led by the Gauteng Deputy Commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni and West Rand District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said the operation was a success.
“The first phase of Operation Shanela started with an overnight raiding of suspects by the detectives and it resulted in the arrest of 714 perpetrators for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault, as well as 146 suspects for crimes committed against women and children.

“So far the arrested persons also include 16 people for drunk and driving, 14 undocumented persons, and two people for possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition,” said Sibiya, who added that a Citi Golf with a tampered chassis number was also seized for further investigations.
