Raid leads to R300k illegal gold bust in Bekkersdal

Man arrested with around R300 000 worth of illegal gold after a successful raid in Bekkersdal. He also attempted to bribe cops and was arrested.

A successful raid during the early hours of Tuesday (March 4) led to the discovery of gold worth about R300 000 on a Randfontein property.

A spokesperson for the police’s West Rand Flying Squad (WRFS) stationed in Krugersdorp, Karen du Plessis, said their officers assisted the Organised Crime Unit in executing a search warrant on the property in Bekkersdal.

“The police entered the premises at 06:00 and within two hours of searching, they found six golden nuggets hidden inside a hollow steel bar, as well as a digital scale,” she revealed.

She concluded that once it was found, the suspect tried to bribe the police with R13 800 and was arrested.
