Shutterlock marketing manager Sheri-Lee van Zyl stated that the company was made aware of a need within the community.

“The Rand West Neighbourhood Watch serves our community as a whole and does everything in their power to get rid of crime. As a business, we decided to support the neighbourhood watch by donating high-visibility jackets, which they can wear around scenes and places where visibility is critical,” Van Zyl said.

About 300 jackets were donated in different sizes.

“If one person’s life can be saved because someone ‘saw’ them, it’s all worth it. There is no value attached to a life.

If the donation makes a difference in one person’s life, we start to win the war against crime,” she expressed.

According to chairperson of the Rand West Neighbourhood Watch, Henry Boyce, the neighbourhood watch has about 15 cases of crime every month. Some of these crimes include damage to infrastructure, burglary, vehicle theft and drugs.

“The most common reasons for these crimes, which are becoming more regular, includes unemployment, illegal immigrants and the increase of substance abuse,” Boyce explained.

He further mentioned that residents have to be more dependent on neighbourhood watches to be safe in the community.

The residents have to take hands with each other as well as local security.

“Residents also have to be on the lookout for markers, and if they hear something, they should not go looking for the source,” he concluded.
