Cable theft disrupts water supply to several areas

Cable theft in Homelake has affected the power supply to a water tower, leaving elevated areas with low pressure or no water.

Power cables at the North Bridge Substation in Freda Avenue were dug up, cut, stripped, and stolen.

According to Community Policing Forum chairperson Ruan Sheppard, a 10-metre trench was dug along Freda Avenue, where the cables were taken. This follows a similar incident in the Randfontein CBD, where about seven metres of cable were stolen.

Sheppard explained that both affected areas are linked to the Industries Substation, which supplies power to Hectorton, the upper part of Homelake, Greenhills Stadium, Robin Park, and surrounding areas.

The theft at the North Bridge Substation has also impacted the local water tower, as it relies on the same power source. As a result, higher-lying areas are expected to experience low water pressure or a complete outage.

Sheppard said they are on the scene and working to repair both cables as quickly as possible.
