Burial site becomes a site for vandalism

A resident shares his concern about the state of Zenzele Cemetery as vandalism continues.

A Bekkersdal resident, who has family members laid to rest in Zenzele Cemetery, has expressed his frustration over ongoing vandalism at the burial site.

Community leader Molatlhegi Sethepo said the vandalism of tombstones became a serious concern about eight months ago, although the perpetrators remain unknown. He added that the damage is easy to carry out because the cemetery is open and lacks proper fencing.

Sethepo believes the most effective way to curb the problem is for the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) to fence off the area to improve security.

The RWCLM was approached for comment, but no response was received by the time of publishing. An update will be provided once comment is received.
