Bekkersdal tavern owner arrested for operating with fraudulent licence

The owner of the tavern where a deadly shooting took place has been arrested.

Police have arrested the owner of the tavern in Bekkersdal where several patrons were shot and killed on December 21.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the arrest followed preliminary investigations, which revealed the owner had been operating the tavern using a fraudulent liquor licence.

“She will be charged with fraud and operating an unlicensed liquor outlet. She is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court in due course,” Masondo said.

The liquor at the premises was confiscated and the tavern was subsequently shut down.
