UPDATE: MEC visits victims of Bekkersdal shooting
The MEC for Health and Wellness has visited victims of the December 21 Bekkersdal shooting as the municipality raises concerns about ongoing violence in the area.
Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Ralehoko visited survivors of the Bekkersdal shooting who are being treated at Leratong Hospital.
Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) spokesperson Phillip Monthiwa confirmed that the visit followed the deadly shooting in Bekkersdal on December 21.
The municipality said it had condemned the violence, noting concerns about a pattern of similar incidents in the area.

According to Violet Nqina, spokesperson in the Office of the Executive Mayor, the shooting was not an isolated incident.

“A similar shooting took place earlier this year, highlighting a disturbing surge in violent crime in the area. This escalation is closely linked to the activities of illegal miners, who continue to terrorise the community.”
The municipality has called on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to address illegal mining and related criminal activity in Bekkersdal.
It has also appealed to President Cyril Ramaphosa to consider deploying the South African National Defence Force to Bekkersdal and other affected areas. In addition, the municipality urged the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, Gwede Mantashe, to formalise small-scale mining as a way to curb illegal operations in Rand West City.
Executive Mayor William Matsheke expressed condolences to those affected by the shooting.
“Our hearts go out to the families and community members who have lost their loved ones in this tragic incident and we wish those who are hospitalised a speedy recovery. We stand in solidarity with them during this time of grief and pain. We will not rest until justice is served.”
