Armed gang of 12 bombs cash van in R28 heist

At least 12 gunmen bombed a cash van during a daring Wednesday afternoon CIT heist on the R28 near Mohlakeng, fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The police are investigating a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that occurred on the R28 next to Ext 11, Mohlakeng, at about 16:40 on February 4.

According to police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, a green Toyota bakkie carrying about 12 suspects rammed a cash van.

“The suspects were armed with automatic rifles and ordered the security guards to exit the vehicle. Shots were fired during the incident before the van was bombed. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. No injuries were reported,” Sibeko said.

He added that the suspects fled the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz and a white Chery.

Investigations are ongoing.
