IFP councillor gunned down in Bekkersdal

The fatal shooting of IFP councillor Mbuso Mzwandile Mthimkhulu has sent shockwaves through the Rand West community, with calls for justice mounting as police investigate the suspected targeted killing.

The community of Bekkersdal has been left in shock and mourning following the fatal shooting of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillor Mbuso Mzwandile Mthimkhulu last week.

According to IFP Gauteng secretary Alco Ngobese, Mthimkhulu was attacked in what is believed to be a targeted incident, raising concerns about the safety of public representatives and ongoing political violence in local communities. Emergency services responded to the scene, but the councillor was declared dead shortly after the incident.

The IFP has condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence and calling for swift justice. The party secretary Ngobese expressed their condolences to Mthimkhulu’s family, friends, and constituents, highlighting his dedication to serving the people of Bekkersdal and his commitment to community development.

Resident of Bekkersdal Shaun Monnapule voiced his outrage, describing Mthimkhulu as a leader who was actively involved in addressing service delivery challenges and advocating for the needs of the community.

Rand West City Local Municipality Executive Mayor William Matsheke said it is unfortunate to have lost Mthimkhulu.

“At the time of his death, we were busy with preparations to arrange personal security for him. He had received a threat on his phone through a private number, and police were then notified.

As the municipality, we were busy formalising that request for security, but unfortunately, he was killed before that could happen,” the mayor said.

At this stage, no arrests have been confirmed, and police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Matsheke also confirmed that the municipality has reported the murder to provincial authorities, and it will now be investigated by the Political Killings Task Team.

The incident has once again placed a spotlight on the risks faced by political leaders at the grassroots level, as well as the urgent need to address violence within communities.

Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
