Dump sites a major safety risk in Toekies
Toekomsrus has numerous illegal dumping sites that residents are concerned will be of benefit to criminals.
Illegal dumping sites in Toekomsrus are fast becoming a concern to residents.
Resident Iverson Fisher explained there are three separate dumping sites he has noticed located on Gouritzrivier, Kraairivier and Banana streets. He noted all three of these sites are located on vacant stands and it has been an issue since he first moved in, in February.
He continued one of the stands is used as a ‘smoking zone for drug users’ and the toilets on the stand are used as a place where people sleep.
“This is an issue that calls for addressing because before we know it, people are going to fall prey to being mugged or their houses being broken into,” said Fisher.
He added another issue is a streetlight in Gouritzrivier Street that only comes on an hour and a half after the others.
On September 18, Rand West Local Municipality workers inspected the vacant stands and spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa shared their findings.
“During the inspection, no erected structures or individuals engaging in criminal activities were observed. However, significant illegal dumping was noted at all the above-mentioned locations,” he said.
The recommendations given to address the issue include:
• Urgent clean-up and removal of dumped materials
• The installation of security measures to prevent future dumping
• Regular patrols to monitor and prevent illegal activities
