‘What are we supposed to eat?’ – Family upset after days without electricity

A family is struggling without electricity, wondering why the municipality has not fixed the problem yet.

Lucky Makhathini has been without electricity for more than a week and is not only worried that it is affecting his personal life but fears it might cause damage to his business.

On November 8, Makhathini’s residence suffered a power outage. He added that the following day he forwarded a complaint to the municipality whereafter municipal workers managed to repair the fault. However, the same day another power outage occurred.

“Since then we have been complaining multiple times. We have been to the municipality on various occasions trying to figure out if they are going to fix the issue. Every time I have been there, I was sent to different people,” he expressed.

Makhathini wonders, if the municipality knows where the fault lies, why they do not fix it?

“We are tired. Who is going to help us?” he wondered.

The lack of electricity has left him and his family with daily challenges. He explained they are unable to make food, bathe and heat milk for their babies. Not only is it affecting his family, but his business as well.

“I need electricity to do my job,” he expressed.

The Rand West City Local Municipality was approached for comment but was unable to give a response. Once a response is received, an update will follow.
