Resident Janet van der Merwe said the main water pipe that runs through her yard has been leaking since last year February. It has now damaged the cement on her property and formed a big hole. She expressed her concern for both her and her dogs getting hurt by accidentally falling into the ‘kiddies swimming pool’ as she referred to the hole. They stacked tyres and crates around the hole to prevent injury.

Further, Van der Merwe explained her entire back garden is underwater and it is now leaking into neighbouring properties. She added when her water meter is off, the leaking water still runs. Her biggest concern is, however, the safety of her seven dogs staying on the property. She expressed her fear that they might drown.

She noted the issue has been reported many times, however, nothing has been done. She added the only time the municipality came out was when there was trouble with her water meter and a new one was installed.

Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) was approached for comment but none was received at the time of print. Their feedback will be published once received.
