Temporary water outages, low water pressure likely on West Rand

Rand Water will reduce pumping at key stations, affecting supply to parts of Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and Randfontein. Residents should prepare for low water pressure and possible outages as crucial infrastructure upgrades continue.

Rand Water has warned of possible water outages and reduced pressure across parts of the West Rand and Johannesburg as major maintenance work moves into its next phase, with supply reductions beginning at 05:00 on Monday, June 30, and expected to last until July 2.

The areas affected include:

• Mogale City
• Rand West City
• Parts of the City of Johannesburg
• Local industries and mines near these municipalities

Water supply will be impacted by a 600-megalitre reduction in pumping capacity per day at the Eikenhof system, one of Rand Water’s key delivery points. The maintenance will be carried out at the Zuikerbosch Plant and is expected to last 48 hours.

“Consumers are advised to prepare for possible low water pressure or interruptions during this period,” said Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo.

Local municipalities will issue area-specific alerts, so residents should stay informed through their local channels.”

The work forms part of a broader planned maintenance project that began on May 29, aimed at strengthening the water supply network ahead of peak demand season in August.

Further work is scheduled from June 30 to July 18, affecting pumping systems at Eikenhof, Zwartkopjes, and Palmiet, with intermittent disruptions possible across the entire region.

Maroo added that the maintenance was intentionally scheduled during the cooler, lower-demand months to minimise disruption.

These upgrades are essential to ensure a more reliable and resilient water supply system,” she said.
