Resident in a hole, fears for community’s safety
A frustrated Mohlakeng resident raised concerns about the safety risks posed by a large hole in front of her home, which she says has been left open and unattended for more than a year.
Outraged resident Mamoche Legodi says she fears for the community’s safety after a hole, allegedly dug by the municipality in front of her home, has remained open and unattended since March last year.
According to Legodi, a pipe burst in front of her home in May of last year, whereafter the municipality dug a hole in an attempt to fix the issue. However, since then, Legodi claims the municipality has failed to commence further works, leaving her with a hole filled with running water in front of her home.
She reported the issue to the municipality multiple times. She even visited the municipal offices to get the attention of officials.
“This issue should have been fixed a long time ago,” she emphasises.

Not only is Legodi horrified about the amount of waste the hole is collecting, but she also fears for the safety of young and elderly residents. She questions whether children who regularly play in the street are safe around the unattended hole. Since there are no streetlights, she also fears that residents might fall into the hole during the night.
Legodi is also personally affected by the hole. She notes that the water filling the hole is overflowing onto her premises and damaging her walls.
“I am a single mother with two children. What happens when my children play outside and the wall finally collapses?” she remarks.
Legodi has requested that the municipality fix the issue with immediate effect.
The spokesperson of the Rand West City Local Municipality, Phillip Montshiwa, acknowledges the issue and emphasises that the municipality is aware of the situation.
He concluded by saying that efforts are currently underway to address the matter.
