New SMME and youth centre on the horizon as municipality targets unemployment
New China-Rand West City partnership aims to empower small businesses and cut joblessness.
Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has partnered with Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LG-SETA) and various stakeholders from China with the aim of establishing a Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) and youth centre to create economic opportunities.
Recently, RWCLM Executive Mayor William Matsheke met with a delegation from China, which included the Director of Changjiang International Trade Group (CITG), Overseas Industrial Park, CITG’s project manager from South Africa, the director of the Chinese Culture Centre and the CEO of the LG-SETA.
RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa added that the partnership is aimed at creating economic opportunities through an SMME and youth centre. He noted it will serve as a hub to support young entrepreneurs and create job opportunities for residents.
Furthermore, 10 local SMMEs will be selected to travel to China, where they will focus on improving their cross-border e-commerce and gain global experience.
“We are excited about the life-changing opportunities it will present to our people. These SMMEs will not only represent us in China, but will return with knowledge and network to help transform our economy,” Matsheke expressed.
