Broken homes and broken promises: Finsbury residents await allocation

Finsbury residents say they were promised relocation to the Dan Tloome Mega City Project, but years later, they are still living in harsh conditions.

Residents of Ward 2 in Finsbury are growing increasingly frustrated with delays in housing allocations linked to the Dan Tloome Mega City Project, saying the Department of Human Settlements has not fulfilled its promises.

Bokkie Pule explained that the issue has persisted for over three years. After the Montrose Mega City Development fell through, many residents were forced to leave unsafe environments. The department assured them they would be reallocated to Dan Tloome, but despite approvals, only a few have moved into new homes.

“They promised to prioritise Ward 2 residents in Phase 1, then Phase 2, but now say allocations can’t proceed because the flats lack electricity. They’ve even referred us to the Droogeheuwel Mega City Development,” Pule said. Fewer than 20 residents from Ward 2 have been placed in homes over the past three years, leaving many living in harsh and unsafe conditions.

Pule has visited the Department of Human Settlements in Pretoria twice and sent multiple emails to provincial and municipal offices, but the situation remains unresolved.

The Randfontein Herald contacted the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements and the Rand West City Local Municipality on November 5 for comment, but none had been received by publication time.
