Road closure near R28 in Randfontein due to expanding sinkhole

Motorists should take note of the immediate closure of the road and are advised to use alternative routes when travelling.

Motorists are urged to take note of a road closure due to an expanding sinkhole on Lombard Avenue just off the R28 in the Randfontein area.

The Gauteng Roads and Transport Department issued a public notice on June 18 of the immediate closure of the road, which is extremely dangerous for motorists.

“A large and expanding sinkhole has forced the immediate closure of the road near the R28,” read the notice.

According to the notice, the hazard is located on a curve.

Motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:

• From the R28 road: Proceed past the closure point and turn right into D962 (motorists travelling from Vereeniging should turn left into D962)
• From N12 (Soweto direction): Continue past R28 and turn left into D671, then follow the route
• From N12 (Carletonville direction): Turn right into D671 and continue along the detour

The department is urging motorists to follow signage, use alternative routes and expect delays.
