1 447 Toekomsrus housing applicants approved for Western Mega Project
Tensions over lengthy waiting periods surfaced during a community engagement in Toekomsrus, where MEC Tasneem Motara addressed service delivery issues and housing delays.
More than 1 400 housing subsidies have been assigned to Toekomsrus applicants as part of the Western Mega Project, Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Tasneem Motara revealed during a community engagement on October 9.
Motara met with local residents to address service delivery challenges and progress on the development, confirming that 1 645 housing subsidies had been approved in total, including 1 447 for Toekomsrus applicants.

Delays and communication gaps
Residents expressed concern about lengthy waiting periods and the lack of communication regarding the status of their housing applications.
Acknowledging these concerns, Motara explained that the department had to prioritise the most vulnerable applicants when allocating housing.
“We ask people to be patient with the department as we are trying to allocate as many people as we can,” she said.

Updating the register
Motara added that the department was working to address challenges with housing allocations and outdated information on the National Housing Needs Register (NHNR). These measures aim to improve transparency and provide residents with clearer, more up-to-date information about their applications.
However, Motara did not provide a specific deadline or completion date for updating the register.

How residents can check their applications
Residents who are unsure whether their housing applications are among the 1 645 approved subsidies can check with the Department of Human Settlements.
Applicants whose subsidies were approved received SMS notifications from the department. Residents who have not received confirmation or are unsure about their application status can visit the Department of Human Settlements portal or contact the department’s helpline on 0800 146 873 for assistance.
The engagement highlighted residents’ continued need for clarity on the progress of their housing applications, particularly among those who have waited years for government-subsidised housing.
