Protesting parents shut down school in Brandvlei

Parents shut down Brandvlei Primary School on Wednesday, May 24 due to sanitation and water challenges.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed they are aware of the protest at Brandvlei.

“Consequently, we dispatched our Infrastructure Unit to investigate the matter and it was discovered that the problem is a result of electricity cable theft which harms the electricity and water supply at the school. All infrastructural challenges detected will be will also be attended, accordingly.”

He added that they want to implore the community to refrain from closing schools and follow the correct procedure when there are infrastructure challenges as this disrupts teaching and learning as curriculum time lost is difficult to recover.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane also confirmed that the police are aware of the situation that took place and they are monitoring it.

Sebonyane added that no injuries were reported so far and no arrests have been made.
