Ten-year celebration for former local teachers organisation

'We have grown from strength to strength despite losing some of our members along the way before and after Covid-19' – West Rand Teachers’ Association.

It has been 10 years since the first teachers joined the West Rand Teachers’ Association which opened in 2013.

This organisation was started to help former teachers keep in touch with each other. These teachers have seen many hardships and have been through tough times from the 1976 riots to the 1985 state of emergency and even the recent Covid-19 pandemic. But through resistance, resilience, and faith in God, they persevered.

Members of the association Mantwa Aphane, Ernest Monnakgotla and Tebogo Mohohlo having a good time.

Zacharia Lakgatlhe, a former teacher from Sedimosang Primary School and one of the founding members of the association said, “I joined in 2014 and we have grown from strength to strength despite losing some of our members along the way before and after Covid-19. They include the likes of Lazarus Matshuisa and his wife, Leballo and Bruce Mpela. We started with just under 20 members and now we have over 50, many of whom are new members. We even have a birthday celebration every three months for our organisation.
