Students test their spelling skills

Students sharpened their language skills during a spelling bee competition held at Westcol.

Rand West City libraries in partnership with Westcol TVET College hosted a spelling bee competition on September 19.

The event was held at the Westcol campus. The purpose of the event was to test students in their ability to grasp words and spell them out without having to refer to anything for the correct spelling. A total of 11 students registered and took part in the competition with Rand West City Libraries Programme librarian Thandeka Legae saying that students need to be nurtured and encouraged to improve their vocabulary and literacy standards.

“We hosted this event to assist students and have them sharpen up where they are lacking in terms of spelling. We are proud to say that the competition was a success. We had Keila Vilanculo from student support services who said that the spelling bee competition would be beneficial overall.

“She, just like me, believes that the competition will assist the lecturers in checking the student’s capabilities where spelling is concerned. She was also hands-on in registering those who were interested in taking part in the competition,” added Thandeka.

The three students to come out on top were Tebogo Mokwena (third place), Lindokuhle Simelane (second place) and Mbali Majozi (first place).
