Woman warns others after being mugged on her way to work

Shirley Mbuma was mugged on her way to work on Greenhills Avenue.

A resident wishes to warn pedestrians to be vigilant on the streets as criminals are seemingly out and about.

This comes after she was a victim of a mugging that occurred on Greenhills Avenue at about 08:00 on November 22. Although she escaped unharmed, she was robbed at knifepoint.

The resident, Shirley Mbuma, said she was travelling from her home in Afri-Village to her place of employment by foot when the incident happened.

“I was on my way to work when I suddenly came across a young-looking man. There wasn’t anything untoward about him. We approached each other and it was during this time that he pulled out a pocket knife. He then told me to keep quiet and give him my phone. Fearing for my life, I decided to hand it over. Thereafter, he instructed me to walk away without raising any suspicion.

“I then ran towards street vendors in the area and alerted them of what happened. That’s when we all started screaming for help and by then it was too late as he already fled,” said Mbuma.

Asked if she had opened up a case with the police, Mbuma said the police told her to first call her cellphone’s service provider and have the phone blocked before she could report the matter, as this is standard procedure.

She said while this is the case, she doesn’t care much about the phone anymore as it is replaceable but cares more about people’s safety, especially now that it is almost Christmas season when crime is expected to be rife.
