Fire safety awareness needs to spread like wildfire in the community

The Myburgh Foundation started a fire safety campaign to spread awareness to local shop owners.

The Myburgh Foundation initiated a fire safety campaign by spreading awareness to local shop owners in areas such as Toekomsrus and Mohlakeng.

Founder and operations manager of the foundation, Randy Christian handed out flyers and visited noncompliant shops during their campaign. He advised business owners about the importance of being equipped with fire extinguishers. The foundation also provided shop owners with the relevant information to apply for a certificate of compliance.

Christian further explained that a fire broke out in August 2021 in the CBD destroying four shops.

He then mentioned the foundation was tasked to do the demolition of the structures after the fire. The Randfontein Herald also reported on it in September.

“This fire could have been contained if the adjacent shop [where the fire started] had a functional fire extinguisher,” Christian said.

He is confident that the fire safety campaign will emphasise the importance of fire safety.

“We hope that this campaign will assist in the safety of the community, especially at night when heaters and open flames are used to keep warm during the winter months,” Christian concluded.
