Jan needs an eye operation and a new home – can you help him?
Help Jan the dog have a successful eye operation and achieve his dream of having a forever home.
November marks Jan the dog’s first anniversary at No More Tears Animal Rescue’s boarding kennels. Not only has Jan been looking for his forever home since 2023, but is he also in need of the community’s help to pay for his eye operation.
Jan is a German Shepherd and Border Collie mix with a brown, black and beige coat. He is around five to six years old and is currently up for adoption.
“Jan is a beautiful dog with a beautiful personality. Even though he does not get along with cats, he would love to have a family of his own,” volunteer Clarisse Kruger said.
“If you hear Jan when he comes out for his turn in the play area, he sounds angry as he runs up and down to greet all the other dogs, but he is just a big teddy bear. He is extremely friendly. He likes to play ball but likes lying on his back for cuddles even more.
“He can also be humble and is not an attention seeker. He is obedient but needs a person he can call his own and trust completely because he has a ‘rescue’ problem of mistrust,” Clarisse explained.
Although he is up for adoption, he has to receive medical attention first before going to his forever family. According to Clarisse, Jan is currently suffering from an eye disease, known as Pannus, and he has to undergo an operation that amounts to R18 000.
Pannus, also known as chronic superficial keratitis, is a lifelong eye disease that affects a dog’s cornea and third eyelid. It’s characterised by a greyish-pink film on the eye, raised lesions, redness, tearing and cornea opacity. If Jan is unable to undergo the operation, he might be left blind.
