Preschoolers show their sting at Spelling Bee
Preschoolers from three Early Childhood Development Centres went head to head in a Spelling Bee competition hosted by Rand West City Libraries.
Rand West City Libraries hosted its annual Early Childhood Development (ECD) Spelling Bee competition where local preschool learners showcased their talents.
On December 3, Isobella Creche, Little Feet Kindergarten and GMO Day Care Centre gathered at the Toekomsrus Library.
According to Programmes Librarian Thandeka Legae, the purpose of the competition was to instil a love for libraries and reading in preschool children from an early age. The event celebrated International Children’s Day and the theme was ‘introducing preschool children to the world of libraries’.
The adjudicators of the day were Benny Sithole and Maria van Tonder. Maria Mapena was the scorekeeper while Nthabiseng Molefe was the timekeeper.
The participating learners were given letters of the alphabet to identify. They were also assessed on letters they could identify, words they could spell, colours they could identify, months of the year they know and numbers they know.
Thandeka added a total of 29 learners participated. The winner of the competition was Jayzhree Drew from GMO Day Care Centre whereafter he received a trophy, schoolbag and puzzles.
“The event was a great success. It highlighted the importance of introducing reading to children from an early age and the importance of library engagement with its stakeholders,” Thandeka concluded.
