Lost your pet? Here’s what to do according to the SPCA

The SPCA advises about what to do if your dear pet is missing.

Since the festive season came to an end, many animals were collected by the RandWest SPCA. Therefore, those who have lost animals are now being advised by the SPCA to drop by before exploring other options.

Inspector manager René van Straten stated since the start of January, they have taken in more than 220 animals, including 121 strays (unclaimed animals).

“The reason for stray animals can be attributed to mainly fireworks throughout the festive season. Especially owners who were on vacation. Maybe the owners had people who were supposed to care for the animals during this time, but the sitters did not look after the animals properly,” she explained.

She advised that when a person realises their pet is missing, the first step they should take is to visit the SPCA as well as all other local animal shelters. This can also include searching in the nearest or surrounding towns. Another likely place to drop by is the local veterinarian clinics.

“There are also a lot of social media platforms where communities help to locate a lost animal. So, if you have a lost pet, make sure to constantly check social media,” she said.

She further advised how to keep animals from running away. First, it is important to ensure that the animal stays inside the yard. If a person closes their gates, it is best to make sure that the animal is still inside the yard.

When a pet owner needs a pet sitter, the owner should ensure that the sitter knows the dog well enough to care for it. If no one can look after the pet, rather send it to a boarding facility.

If residents do find a missing animal, René appeals to the community to bring that animal to the SPCA. Residents can also phone the office.

If a person would like to call the SPCA about their missing pet, they would usually be asked to send a photo. The photo can be emailed to randfonteinoffice@spcarandwest.co.za. The person should also ensure they send all the necessary details about the animal.

If anyone has an enquiry or would like to contact the SPCA, call them on 011 412 3114.
